If you’re anxiously inclined, or prone to panic, or just going through a stressful period in life, you may already be familiar with the well-established stress-reduction methods: Exercise, eat healthily, go to therapy, meditate or do yoga, and volunteer/be of service, to name just a few. Research has shown time and again that these are all excellent practices to manage stress over the long-term. But when you’re stressed in the moment, you may need a quick-and-dirty way to stop your mind from spinning. Here are a few, research-based ways to short-circuit the stress response and get your mind into a calmer place.

Taking a shower can be an oddly effective way to intercept the stress response, and that’s true for least a couple of reasons. Physiologically, hot and cold showers each have effects on hormone and neurotransmitter levels, from reducing cortisol to releasing endorphins to increasing oxytocin and dopamine levels. Hot and cold baths may even have even additional benefits for the brain. But showering or bathing may also help on an even more fundamental level – something about the water hitting our skin or the act of cleaning may tap into some ancient sense of well-being and calm. Whatever the mechanisms behind the phenomenon, there’s something about water that’s uncanny at interrupting the stress response and redirecting your mind to a better place.
