It found naps may help slow brain aging, too.  The team of researchers behind the study -- who work out of Harvard and University College London -- were well aware of all the science showing the short-term cognitive benefits of napping. But they wondered, could a short afternoon snooze also improve brain health long term? Investigating questions like this can be tricky, however. You can't, for instance, just compare folks who nap with folks who don't and see who does better. Some people take frequent naps because they are already struggling with health problems. A recent sketch on “Saturday Night Live”, which refers to studies concluding that males in America are increasingly friendless, suggests that they are. A young woman, frustrated by her boyfriend’s inability to open up to anyone else, takes him by the hand and leads him to a “man park” (like the dog version) where, after a shy start, he finds fellow males to make friends with. Some viewers disliked the likening of men to dogs, but the sketch, which went viral online, illustrates fresh concerns about an old worry: the loneliness of American men. As people in rich countries work longer hours, marry later and spend more time with their children, not friends, research suggests loneliness is increasing. A study by the University of Pennsylvania found a direct link between social-media usage and loneliness. More time spent online means less time building friendships. The problem may be particularly severe in America. A large international study by British academics found that people in individualistic countries (a measure on which America scores highest) reported greater loneliness. America also has one of the highest divorce rates; men may be more likely to lose mutual friends after a split. A strong work ethic and geographical mobility (meaning friendships are liable to be lost or weakened as people relocate) is likely to exacerbate the problem. If you're hoping to armor your own marriage against the slings and arrows of the entrepreneurial life, it's well worth a read in full. But what struck me as most useful was one particular theme Manson noticed after wading through this mountain of marital wisdom.  "As we scanned through the hundreds of responses we received, my assistant and I began to notice an interesting trend. People who had been through divorces and/or had only been with their partners for 10-15 years almost always talked about communication being the most important part of making things work," he writes. "But we noticed that the thing people with marriages going on 20, 30, or even 40 years talked about most was respect." Much of the rest of the article discusses communication from various angles. And talking openly and frequently with your partner is valuable according to just about everyone. But by the end of his experiment -- and his article -- Manson concludes that one word trumps even the best communication skills when it comes to keeping a partnership going over decades. (Four out of 10 say they despise billionaires; no gray area here.) Interestingly, 44 percent of respondents said they "have the available tools" to become billionaires. ... even with all the pressure to go to college, school provided very little in the way of discussion about what kind of careers paid what, how to live within one's means whatever that career was, let alone how one might create their own business and work for themselves.
