� � � � � � The $200 billion playbook that kneecapped Big Tobacco is coming for Mark Zuckerberg and his social media offspring - Fortune    With the attorney generals of more than 40 states teamed up and alleging that a multibillion-dollar company’s product is addictive and harming youth, the stakes couldn’t be any higher. That was the situation in 1998, when Philip Morris, along with several other of the world’s largest tobacco companies, ended years of litigation with 46 states through a master settlement agreement that has now resulted in more than $200 billion in payments. Nearly three decades later, a burgeoning legal battle looks strangely familiar—this time with the internet’s social media giants in the role of Big Tobacco.  On Tuesday, 42 state attorneys general sued Instagram’s parent company Meta for allegedly damaging children’s mental health with its social media technologies. The complaint, which is 233 pages long, mentions “addiction” over 30 times, featuring evidence from the company as well as psychology experts who allege Meta has intentionally and deceptively addicted children to its technologies with the goal of maximizing profits.  Continued here � � � � � � Don't like ads? BuzzFeed is in advanced talks to sell Complex Networks, the streetwise digital media company behind the popular ComplexCon cultural festival, at less than half the price it paid for the company two years ago, a sign of the industrywide troubles afflicting digital media. Ntwrk, an e-commerce company backed by LiveNation Entertainment and Main Street Advisors, is close to paying less than $140 million for Complex, according to two people familiar with the deal. Finds - The New York Times    Few Americans have received the latest vaccines against the coronavirus: Just over 7 percent of adults and 2 percent of children had received the shot as of Oct. 14, according to a survey presented on Thursday to scientific advisers to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The uptake is weak even among those most at risk of severe illness. Only one in five people age 75 or older has been vaccinated, along with about 15 percent of those ages 65 to 74, according to the survey of nearly 15,000 people. More than 1,200 people are dying of Covid each week, according to C.D.C. data. “That’s a travesty,” said Dr. David Kimberlin, a pediatrician at the University of Alabama at Birmingham who represented the American Academy of Pediatrics at the meeting. In fact, Earth’s moon might actually be 40 million years older than scientists previously believed. By conducting an atom-by-atom analysis on crystals that were brought back by Apollo astronauts in 1972, a team of geochemists and plenary scientists now calculate that the igneous orb is at least 4.46 billion years old.
