Last month, three new creative directors made their debuts during Milan Fashion Week: Sabato De Sarno at Gucci, Peter Hawkings at Tom Ford and Simone Bellotti at Bally. The day after Paris Fashion Week ended, Seán McGirr was named designer at Alexander McQueen, replacing Sarah Burton after more than a decade. Less than a week later, Chloé announced its new creative director, Chemena Kamali. Any day now, Moschino is expected to unveil its new designer. And yet, despite all the changes — the kind of switcheroos that once would have signaled New Looks and Wardrobe Upheaval and all the stuff that makes what happens inside these brands affect the people who actually wear the products the brands produce — the result has been largely status quo. In the worst way. Much has been made of the fact that Mr. McGirr’s appointment at Alexander McQueen means that now all six of the fashion brands owned by Kering, the second-largest fashion group in the industry, are run by white male designers — and not just white male designers, but white male designers with practically the same haircuts, approach to facial hair and résumés. Goldman Sachs said on Wednesday that it would offload GreenSky, a major player in the “buy now, pay later” lending sector, less than two years after buying the company, in the latest hit to its consumer-finance ambitions. Goldman will take an immediate loss from the transaction in its third-quarter earnings, which are due out next week. The bank is selling GreenSky to a group of money managers, including the private-equity firms Sixth Street and K.K.R. The selling price was not disclosed. Before it all collapsed last fall, the cryptocurrency mogul Sam Bankman-Fried was at the center of a global business empire. The 31-year-old mogul started his first company in the San Francisco Bay Area, before moving to Hong Kong and then to the Bahamas, where his FTX cryptocurrency exchange was based until it filed for bankruptcy in November. Along the way, Mr. Bankman-Fried left his mark on luxury homes in Washington and on the Bahamian island of New Providence, and splashed FTX’s logo on a basketball arena in Miami. It's because the threads binding the strategy of unicorn-valuation growth are unraveling at a quickening pace. To drive the point home, I liken this change in startup strategy to a similar shift that has changed the way we think of movies, because the changes are similar and separated by only a few years. Plus, everyone understands movies. Over the past 10 years, the mainstreaming of streaming has changed everything about how we create and consume long-form filmed entertainment. And while the Hollywood machine can still produce the occasional blockbuster sequel that succeeds the traditional way (Top Gun: Maverick, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever), the big box-office bombs keep piling up, and we're never going back.  Continued here
