� � � � � � New York Needs to Get Spongier—or Get Used to More Floods - WIRED    Two years after the remnants of Hurricane Ian dumped up to 10 inches of rain on New York City in just two hours, the metropolis is once again inundated today by extreme rainfall. It is one of the many cities worldwide grappling with a counterintuitive effect of climate change: Sometimes, it will get wetter, not drier.  On a warming planet, it'll rain more and individual storms will get more intense. This pain will be especially acute in urban areas, which are built on stormwater infrastructure designed to handle the rainfall of yesteryear. Think back to what the builders of the last century wanted: sewers and canals that funneled rainwater as quickly as possible into a river, lake, or ocean, before it had a chance to accumulate. That worked fine, most of the time. But over the intervening years, rare catastrophic flooding has been growing more common. Ancient wastewater systems are now tasked with getting rid of ever-bigger inundations.  Today's concrete- and asphalt-heavy cities are also now a kind of seal atop the landscape. They have lots of hard surfaces like roads and parking lots, and maybe only a smattering of softer surfaces like parks. Whereas the poverty rate among youngsters living with two married parents is 7.5%, among those raised by a single mother it is 35%. Children of married parents tend to behave better in school, stay in education longer and earn more as adults. Those raised by married parents appear to be at an advantage even after controlling for the age, education and race of their mothers. Yet marriage has been in long-term decline (and without a compensating rise in unmarried cohabitation). Today more than two-fifths of births are to unmarried mothers, up from less than a fifth in 1980. The fall is unequal across demographic groups: only 11% of births to college-educated mothers are outside wedlock. Marriage has gone from being a pretty universal institution to an exclusive one that propels life advantage through generations. In recent years economists have documented these trends and their relationship to inequality and social mobility. Melissa Kearney of the University of Maryland summarises the literature in a new book, “The Two-Parent Privilege”. Ms Kearney is aware that many liberals—and very few conservatives—will wince at her findings, and writes in an almost apologetic tone as a result. “Not talking about these facts is counterproductive,” she pleads. Continued here � � � � � � The John Fetterman Dress Code Debacle Proves 1 Thing: Your Business Needs a Dress Code Today - Inc.com    As a Pennsylvania voter, I am thoroughly embarrassed by John Fetterman's choice to dress like he is skipping seventh-grade gym class. While from a strictly legal perspective, I think once someone is duly elected to public office, they should not be subject to any dress code or other rule that prohibits them from voting, the qualifications for employment in your business are not covered in the Constitution. If the Senate were a regular business, I would be appalled by Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's decision to do away with the "unofficial" dress code and pleased that the other senators had some sense. Now, the Senate has an official, enforceable dress code that requires men to wear a "coat, tie, and slacks or other long pants." I'm a huge fan of dress codes. But that doesn't mean I think employees in your business should dress like senators. I don't care if your business dress code includes tank tops, Daisy Duke shorts, or flip-flops. Knock yourself out.
